Legg Mason International Equities (LMIE) is an affiliate firm within Legg Mason, Inc., which operates with complete investment independence. It has its genesis in the management of emerging market equities, which dates back to 1991. But while its commitment to international and emerging market investment remains fundamental to the firm, today LMIE specialises not only in global emerging market equities but also Asia Pacific, including Australia, and Japanese equities. Underpinning everything it does is an unshakeable belief that fundamental research and in-depth market knowledge can help to add value across these equity markets.
As a result, LMIE has a strong local presence in the majority of the markets in which it invests, with over 50 investment professionals organised into discrete investment teams based on the ground in locations in London, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, New York, Sao Paulo, Warsaw and Melbourne. LMIE believes that it is important to draw on the experiences and expertise of different nationalities and cultures, so it employs a wide range of people as diverse as the markets in which it invests.
It is also important to note that LMIE has had a long and abiding presence in Asia, including China, which is becoming an increasingly important economy on the world stage. More generally, LMIE is ideally placed to take advantage of the new drivers for growth emanating from the emerging economies across the globe.
Philosophy

In terms of investment process, LMIE believes its unique strength lies in the depth of experience within its respective teams and its unparalleled focus on in-depth research. Incorporating both country and regional analysis, it looks at stocks from both a top-down and a bottom-up perspective. Also, unlike other managers, it does not have a bias towards either growth or value stocks, employing what it describes as "a core approach", which incorporates elements of both approaches. Finally, LMIE's portfolio construction process ranges from a highly systematic, disciplined approach, for example, for its global emerging market equity products, to a more thematic approach for its regional products.

Legg Mason Investments provides its clients with access to LMIE primarily through its UK, Dublin and Luxembourg domiciled funds, in which LMIE serves as investment manager.
